QUARTILE Film Rating System Blog

The Most Visually Stunning Movies on Netflix

Lawrence of Arabia
Lawrence of Arabia: shot on 70mm, and a perfect 4 for Cinematography on Quartile.

Some movies you put on in the background. Others make you stop scrolling your phone and just look. This list is the second kind.

These are the most visually stunning movies streaming on Netflix right now, every one of them rated a perfect 4 out of 4 for Cinematography on Quartile. On Quartile, that category covers more than the camera:

Cinematography: The artistic vision, tone, look, and feel of the production. Influenced by the quality of the camera work, lighting, and editing. This category includes Soundtrack.

We keep the full list live, ranked and updated daily as Netflix's catalog changes, at The Most Visually Stunning Movies on Netflix, and as a Most Stunning on Netflix playlist you can follow. Here are the highlights, as of October 2026.

Epics built for the biggest screen you own

Gladiator tops the whole list with a 9.5 on Quartile, and it's a perfect 4 in every category but one. Ridley Scott's Rome is all dust, gold light and roaring crowds, and it won Best Picture. Lawrence of Arabia is the reason people still say a desert can be beautiful: David Lean shot it on 70mm film, and the match cut from a blown-out match to a desert sunrise is still one of the most famous edits ever made. RRR is S. S. Rajamouli turning action into spectacle, and its song "Naatu Naatu" won an Oscar. His earlier Bāhubali: The Beginning is just as big and just as gorgeous.

War, up close

1917 is built to look like one continuous shot, following two soldiers across the Western Front in what feels like real time, and Roger Deakins won the Oscar for shooting it. All Quiet on the Western Front covers the same war from the German side, and it won four Oscars, including Best Cinematography. For something lighter, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is Guy Ritchie's slick, sunlit World War II caper.

Sci-fi and speed

Alien still looks like nothing else, with H. R. Giger's designs and a spaceship that feels lived in and dangerous. Top Gun: Maverick put its actors in real fighter jets, and you can feel it in every flight sequence.

Animation that looks like nothing else

Some of the best-looking films on Netflix are animated. Klaus is hand-drawn, but it's lit so beautifully it looks almost three-dimensional, and it was nominated for the Oscar. Loving Vincent is the story of Van Gogh's last days, and every single frame is an oil painting, painted by hand. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish looks like a storybook come to life, and its fight scenes switch styles mid-swing. From Japan, Violet Evergarden: The Movie is Kyoto Animation at its most delicate, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 are pure spectacle, and The First Slam Dunk makes a basketball game feel like an action movie.

Small, strange and handmade

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is Wes Anderson adapting Roald Dahl, with sets that slide and change in front of you like a stage play, and it won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short. Bo Burnham: Inside was made by one person, alone in one room, and it's one of the most inventive-looking things on the service.

The real world, beautifully shot

David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet is Attenborough looking back on a lifetime of filming the natural world, and the footage is breathtaking. Our Planet: Behind the Scenes shows what it took to get shots like those. Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom films the 2013 and 2014 protests in Kyiv from inside the crowd. And All the Empty Rooms is a quiet, devastating short documentary, and one of the highest-rated films on this list.

How these are ranked

Every film on Quartile is rated in five categories: Plot, Acting, Cinematography, Novelty and Ending. Each is scored 1 to 4, with no neutral middle, and the five add up to a Q, a score out of 10. Every film here scored a perfect 4 for Cinematography from the people who watched it. Here's how the rating system works.

Netflix's catalog changes every month, so for the current ranking, check the live list. And if you've seen any of these, rate them on Quartile and tell us if we got it right.
