Quartile is a film and TV rating app that tells you why a movie is good, not just that it is. Every film and TV season is rated in five categories: Plot, Acting, Cinematography, Novelty and Ending.
Each category is scored 1 to 4, with no neutral middle:
The five scores are added together and halved to make the Q, a score out of 10 that runs from 2.5 to 10. For example, 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 13, and 13 halved is a Q of 6.5. Each category stays visible under the Q, so a score never hides its reasons.
Quartile is a film and TV rating app. Every title is rated in five categories, Plot, Acting, Cinematography, Novelty and Ending, so you can see why a movie is good, not just that it is. You can browse by what a film does well, build and share playlists, follow friends with good taste, and see where to stream it. It is free on the web at quartilefilm.com and on iPhone.
Each of the five categories is rated 1 to 4: 4 is Well Above Average, 3 is Above Average, 2 is Below Average and 1 is Well Below Average. There is no neutral middle, so every rating takes a position. The five scores are added together and halved to make the Q, a score out of 10 that runs from 2.5 to 10. For example, 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 13, and 13 halved is a Q of 6.5.
Plot: The structured sequence of events, character arcs, and narrative developments that form the core story. Also called storyline. Acting: The art of inhabiting and portraying a character convincingly, through voice, movement, and emotional expression, in a way that serves the story and feels authentic rather than performative. For documentary films, this category becomes Narration. Cinematography: The artistic vision, tone, look, and feel of the production. Influenced by the quality of the camera work, lighting, and editing. This category includes Soundtrack. Novelty: Freshness of aspect, design, or style. Ending: The final or concluding part of storyline; conclusion.
Letterboxd and IMDb give each film one overall score. Quartile splits every rating into five categories, so two films with the same overall score can still be told apart: one might have a Well Above Average ending and a weaker plot. You can also browse by those categories, for example the best-shot science fiction or the thrillers with the best endings.
