An arrogant Texas millionaire hires four adventurers to rescue his kidnapped wife from a notorious Mexican bandit.
The Professionals is a solidly crafted late-Western with strong ensemble work from Lancaster, Marvin, Bellamy and Ryan, but its kidnapping-rescue premise is fairly conventional genre fare. Where it truly excels is Conrad Hall's stunning widescreen desert cinematography, capturing the Sonoran landscape with striking compositional power. The plot has a neat twist revealing the wife's true situation, elevating it above routine, but the overall story and character dynamics remain familiar. Acting is professional and dependable rather than revelatory. The ending subverts expectations pleasingly but not dramatically. A quality studio Western that does most things well without being singularly distinctive.
