Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
On Quartile, Moana scores 6/10 across five categories — strongest on Plot (Above Average), weakest on Novelty (Well Below Average).
Teenage Moana answers the Ocean's call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
A live-action remake of Disney's 2016 animated film, Moana (2026) closely follows its source material with little meaningful reinvention. The plot is a near-direct retelling of the original, offering nothing structurally new for audiences familiar with it. Acting is competent for a live-action family musical, and the cinematography captures ocean vistas adequately, though it rarely exceeds what modern blockbuster production affords. Novelty scores very low — this is a by-definition derivative work, a live-action remake that doesn't reimagine its source in any distinctive way. The ending mirrors the animated film's resolution, which was already considered a fairly conventional hero's-journey wrap-up, making it feel doubly familiar here.
